However, no mortal may live with the knowledge of their world, so if Artemis is rejected he cannot allow the girl to live.

Wil was drafted in the early 60's to be sent overseas to fight in a war that he didn't believe in. During his time there he met a strange woman that wasn't what she appeared to be. She was a werewolf. Wolves outside of packs, as she was, tend to be feral and destructive, and the woman knew that he would make a strong werewolf that she could use. Once she turned him, however, he ran off, believing himself to be a monster. After years of roaming, he finds a pack that is run by and older alpha and his mate. They show him that he is not a monster. As they get to know him, they see that his compassion and kindness would make him a good leader, and they begin to train him to become the next leader of their pack. As time goes on, Wil becomes friends with Artemis, the heir to the vampire coven that Wils pack is in a symbiotic relationship with. Wil becomes sort of like Artemis' big brother, as Othello was busy with the females of the coven. When he travels to the mortal world with Artemis, it's Wils job to dispose of the bodies of those who know too much, causing him to break down into a self hating state.

When the girls are taken, Buxton is struck down trying to protect his friends, however Wil feels respect for him and instead of getting rid of his body, as they had been doing up to that point, he buries him. Before his body decays the Reaper Finem sees potential in him, and restores him to the world of the living, but his skin has lost its pigment. When Finem brings him back from the dead, she marks him as one of her kin.]
